Why These Stories Matter

A Community Message from BRIMI

Our stories were created to help every child see the beauty within themselves. Skyy & Brimielle are African American girls, and their stories are rooted in the experiences, imagination, and relationships that shape Black girlhood. It is our hope that, for many young Black girls, these characters may feel meaningful, offering a reflection of who they are and who they are free to become.

Childhood is a time to dream, imagine, and grow without pressure. It is a season meant for joy, curiosity, and learning who you are in a safe and loving way. Through Skyy & Brimielle, we seek to celebrate this important stage of life and the kindness, confidence, and creativity that live inside every child.

At its heart, Black girlhood refers to the innocence, imagination, and emotional world of young Black girls before the world places expectations on who they should be. These stories were created with the intention of honoring that space, while affirming a belief we hold for all children: every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated.

For generations, Black girls have often been expected to be strong before being allowed to be soft, to lead before being given space to simply be. Through Skyy & Brimielle, we aim to make room for softness, freedom, compassion, imagination, and emotional expression, creating stories where girls can explore friendship, feelings, and self-confidence at their own pace.

Skyy and Brimielle reflect the friendships we see in our communities, the way young girls encourage one another, share ideas, dream out loud, and practice kindness. These stories are designed to highlight the importance of emotional support, self-worth, and compassion as children grow.

While Skyy & Brimielle are rooted in Black girlhood, they are shared with all children as stories of kindness, friendship, and growth. At the same time, they hold a mirror up to African American girls, affirming that their hearts, hair, laughter, and ideas are worthy of love, celebration, and storytelling.

By supporting these stories, you are helping us begin the work of nurturing confident, emotionally healthy, and compassionate children, young readers who we hope will grow up knowing that beauty truly resides in their image.
