A Positive Self-Esteem Mindset Matters

Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. It's based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which can feel difficult to change. We might also think of this as self-confidence. Your self-esteem can affect whether you like and value yourself as a person. People with healthy self-esteem tend to feel positive about themselves and life, and are better able to deal with challenges. People with low self-esteem tend to see themselves and their lives in a more negative light, and feel less able to take on challenges.

Here are some ways to improve self-esteem:

  • Take care of yourself: Get enough sleep, eat regularly, and try to exercise.

  • Spend time outside: Being in green spaces can help how you feel.

  • Practice mindfulness and meditation: You could try a meditation course for self-esteem.

  • Make a list of your good qualities: Think about the good qualities you show toward others, and try to show one of them every day.

  • Spend time with people who make you happy: Don't waste time on people who don't treat you well.

Ways to improve low self-esteem

  1. Recognise what you're good at. We're all good at something, whether it's cooking, singing, doing puzzles or being a friend.

  2. Build positive relationships.

  3. Be kind to yourself.

  4. Learn to be assertive.

  5. Start saying "no".

  6. Give yourself a challenge.
